Overview

We will take you to the highest peak accessible by car: Pico do Areeiro, with its panoramic views. On the way down to Ribeiro Frio, we will pass by the Worlds Patrimony Forest considered by the UNESCO: Laurissilva.

By lunchtime we will be stopping in Santana, known by its typical thatched triangular houses. Finally, in the afternoon we will visit the place where the settlers sat foot for the first time in Madeira: Machico.

What To Expect

Belvedere Du Terreiro Da Luta
Terreiro da Luta is located north of Monte (Funchal) and the area was once the last stop on the only cog railway (Monte Railway) in Madeira. It is also where the Our Lady of Peace sanctuary is located.

Pico do Arieiro
At 1818 meters, is Madeira Island's third highest peak. In most days, visitors can stand and look down on the clouds. The air is fresh and crisp and the sun very bright. On a clear day it is possible to see several locations through the island and the neighboring island of Porto Santo, 95 km to the northeast.

Ribeiro Frio
In the interior of the island withint Laurissilva Forest, this little village is known for its trout farm and lushfull green areas. Here is the starting point for many levadas, one of them leading to Balcões.

This parish founded in 1550 by settlers who chose the name Faial for the shurbs that are indigenous to this area, Myrica faya. (stop on a view point)

Santana
Famous for its traditional homes, constructed with sloping triangular rooftops and protected with straw, here you can find a tourist themed park and the culture house of Santana.

Miradouro da Portela
This viewpoint provides some of the most stunning views of the island from where we can observe Porto da Cruz, Penha de Águia and part of Santana. Here you will find a magnificent valley of mountains that flow into the sea.

Ponta de Sao Lourenco
This is the easternmost point of the island. Its name was given after João Gonçalves Zarco caravel. Its peculiar sea cliff formations provide amazing views to both north and south sea.

Machico
This is where the first portuguese colonists settled in 1419 leaded by João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira. This parish is probably the place that offers the most natural diversity and strong cultural presence.
