Not Your Average Tour Company!

I decided to sign up for this tour because I wanted to experience more of the island without having to drive. I have to say, taking this tour was the best decision I made while there. Tony, my tour guide, went above and beyond to make this tour the BEST experience for me and left me with memories of beautiful Madeira to last a lifetime! There was no place on the east side of the island left unexplored and there were no questions Tony couldn't answer, being he is a native to the island of 26 years. I keep saying "me", because everyone canceled the morning of the tour, leaving only me. Secret Madeira could have easily canceled the tour all together, but instead they decided to upgraded me to VIP, driving me around in a Mercedes all day!!! I cannot thank Secret Maderia enough! Do yourself a favor and book with this tour company, you will not regret it!
Comprehensive tour of the east of the island

We were picked up on time by Tony, our guide, and after picking up one more couple we made our way to the first stop; the mountain village of Camacha where the main wickerwork factory was based - they stopped making it due to plastic chairs being cheaper and easier to produce, sadly. There's not much to see in the village but the drive there offered breath-taking views and scarily narrow mountain paths.

From there we made our way to the Pico do Arieiro Radar Station via Eucalyptus forests and steep gullies. When I read the description of the East Tour I wasn't that impressed but, in actual fact, the landscape is fabulous and well worth the trip. The thought of visiting a radar station didn't really grab me either but, in actual fact, this was the highlight of the trip for me as the golf ball like structure was truly fascinating as it sparkled against the low sun. I found the narrow paths leading to the viewpoints terrifying as the drop down was staggering, however, I was glad I persevered as the views were truly spectacular.

Going on holiday during a pandemic has its advantages as there are no queues to view monuments, which is brilliant. I can imagine that the half-hour we had to spend at the radar site would've been spent waiting for queues of people to take photos at the trig point at the top of the hill where the radar was situated, whereas the place was practically empty!

We made our way down to the Ribeiro Frio (cold river) where we visited a trout farm. It was rather a cruel place with the fish packed into small containers. One poor female fish was in a small tank alone waiting to be used for breeding purposes. I can't say I enjoyed this part of the trip but the town in the immediate area was nice with a lovely church. Unlike back in Scotland the churches remain open for visitors.

We did a levada (irrigation) walk where you make your way along the narrow paths at the sides of the levada to a lovely viewpoint where there were chaffinches who would eat out of your hand (if you had any food with you). Unfortunately for us Tony failed to tell us about the birds so we didn't know to buy seeds at the shop en route. However, luckily, a generous tourist shared her seeds with us. It was truly wonderful watching these beautiful birds feeding and I'm glad, thanks to this kind woman, that we got the opportunity.

We travelled via the area of Faial to Santana where examples of the typical thatched houses of Madeira were located. The inside of these tiny dwellings reminded me of the Tenement House in Glasgow, which is a single-end property where the bed, kitchen and living room is in the same room, practically.

As we were here in December every village we visited had a Nativity Scene in the main square and some of the most beautiful decorations I've ever seen.

At Santana there was the option to have a typical Madeiran lunch in a local restaurant for around 13 Euros but we were not aware of that until the day of the trip and had brought a picnic with us.

On the way down the mountainside we visited the ancient capital of Machico, then onto Ponta de São which has some spectacular rock formations. We called in to a Rum Factory in Porto da Cruz where we got to sample the various drinks on offer such as Poncha - a mixture of honey and alcohol, the local rum and other liqueurs.

The trip started around 8:45 am and continued to 19:00 pm. The time flew by as our guide was interesting and the landscape beautiful. I would thoroughly recommend this tour - it's much more interesting that the description on the company website.
Inesquecível
