Overview

The main goal on this hike is to stay away from the beaten tourist path.
We want to provide you with a true and quiet nature and forest experience.
We start early and our groups are of maximum 6 people.

This hike takes place in the lush Laurel Forest in Ribeiro Frio and we do a combination of trails. We start with an easy and flat walk, along a Levada (the irrigation system used in Madeira). Then, we will find an old, rugged levada that will take us up to Chão das Feiteiras, where (depending on the weather) we might see the highest peaks of Madeira.

From here, we will go back to the starting point by walking an Old Caminho Real, the Royal Trails that locals used to walk from one village to another.

For this hike, we recommend rain jacket, mountain boots, comfortable clothes, rucksack, water and snacks and walking sticks. Join our hike!

What To Expect

Ribeiro Frio

Ribeiro Frio, a beautiful lush valley in the East Side of Madeira, it's known for the Trout's Farm, for the Balcões Walk and for the Levada do Furado. It is a great attraction among our visitors.
Although popular, we still want to show you some of the beautiful trails around this area, out of the beaten track.

We leave Funchal early in order to arrive at Ribeiro Frio before most touristic agencies. Our walk begins in the popular, but beautiful Levada do Furado, the flat, easy bit of this walk.

After about 4 km, we start our uphill, technical and slippery walk towards Chão das Feiteiras. This uphill is about 2 km and takes about 1 hour.

From Chão das Feiteiras, we will experience one of the old Caminhos Reais, the Royal Paths, an ancient road system of the island.

These Caminho Reais are paved with cobblestones and therefore are extremely slippery.

Throughout this walk, we will be able to observe several endemic and native plants and eventually some birds. Join our group!
