Overview

Travel into Madeira’s hilly interior to the village of Santo da Serra. The community’s market is one of the week’s key social events, and you’ll see a blend of islanders and visitors mingling in the aisles, gathering shopping and souvenirs.

There is farm-fresh produce, homemade sweets, and the island’s traditional rum punch for sale, and plenty of places to stop and snack as you wander. Following your time in the Santo da Serra market, continue to the nearby gardens, where you’ll find a network of quiet paths that are perfect for a Sunday stroll.

Begin the return trip to Funchal, with a stop along the way to visit Santa Cruz, a coastal city that’s Madeira’s second-largest community. Take an easy-going walk on the seaside promenade, then continue to Funchal, where this 3-hour tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel.

My friend and I went on this trip yesterday. The driver of the mini bus was very polite and informative, as well as helping us on and off the bus. The trip itself was interesting, the scenery amazing, and all in all, well worth the money.

Lot of the road and views on this trip had already been covered by the West and East tours I had enjoyed before. The market was busy and quite large but not a patch on the one in Funchal. A short walk from there took you past a little church and on to the gardens. They were in fact more like a cultivated woods and I was expecting something to materialise every time I turned a corner. There were some animals; a couple of horses, chickens and deer plus a couple of peacocks, one of which was an incredible white one. All were housed in large pens and seemed healthy and contented. The locals used the area for picnics etc., and were very proud of it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit again
